North Mountain Supply Sparkolloid powder wine finings in an 8 oz jar, formulated as a hot mix clarifier to help clear wine after primary racking. Carries a positive charge that binds with negatively charged particles so they settle out, leaving wine brighter and clearer.
North Mountain Supply Sparkolloid Powder Hot Mix Wine Finings is an effective clarifier designed to help home winemakers achieve clear, polished wines. Packaged in a convenient 8 oz plastic jar, it is easy to measure, mix and store between batches.
Sparkolloid carries a positive charge, which allows it to bind with many of the negatively charged particles that cause haze in wine. Once bound together, these particles become heavier and settle to the bottom of the fermenter or carboy, making it easier to rack clear wine off the sediment.
This fining agent is best used after the wine has been racked at least once and has largely finished fermenting. Applying it at this stage helps you remove remaining haze and fine particulates before the final racking or bottling step.
Basic usage directions:
Dissolve 1 tablespoon of Sparkolloid powder in 1 cup (8 fl oz) of boiling water
Simmer gently for about 5 minutes while stirring to fully hydrate and disperse the powder
Add the hot mixture to approximately 6 gallons (23 L) of wine and stir gently to distribute
After adding Sparkolloid, allow the wine to sit undisturbed so the finings can do their work. It is generally recommended to wait about 1 week before racking or bottling, giving time for the sediment to compact on the bottom and for the wine above to clear.
Because it is food grade and designed for winemaking, Sparkolloid is suitable for a wide variety of wine styles, including grape wines, fruit wines and country wines. It can be used in both white and red wines, although clarity will be more visually noticeable in lighter colored wines.
